Recontouring

Recontouring

Benefits

  • Recontouring improves the appearance by creating harmony and balance in the mouth.
  • It also helps improve dental health by removing overlaps between the teeth, where bacteria can accumulate.

Who is this procedure for?

  • Patients with chipped teeth
  • Patients who wish to adjust slight irregular tooth shape that is caused by uneven teeth
  • Patients who wish to adjust their canines
  • Patients who wish to smooth out pits or bulges in the tooth enamel.

Who should not consider this procedure?

  • Patients whose teeth have important imperfections, such as big chips or deep fractures
  • Patients whose enamel layer is too thin
  • Patients whose tooth pulp lies too close to the tooth’s surface.

What happens before the procedure?
In order to determine whether you are a candidate for recontouring, the dentist will take an X-ray that will reveal the size and location of your tooth pulp. Anesthesia is not usually used since this procedure does not affect the tooth pulp.

What happens during the procedure?
The dentist uses a sanding disc or a fine diamond bur in order to remove small amounts of tooth enamel. Special sandpaper is used to reach the imperfections between the teeth and to shape and smooth the sides. At the end the dentist polishes the tooth

What happens after the procedure?
If the recontouring is not combined with other procedures such as veneers or bonding it does not require special treatment. However, the dentist will advise the patient to maintain a daily routine of brushing and flossing.
